Design as a profession
In-house graphic and product design established the practical foundation: make clear work, solve real constraints and prepare ideas for production.

Independent since 1999
A creative practice shaped over decades by drawing, design, publishing, teaching, technology, physical craft and the people brought together along the way.
The long view
Dan Seward founded Vigilante Studios from a practice that never fit neatly into one category. Illustration led to identity and editorial work; publishing opened into community-building; digital design grew into websites and interactive work; 3D led back into sculpture, molds and physical objects.
Over time, Vigilante became a collaborative studio—bringing specialists together around the needs of the project while keeping the process direct, practical and close to the craft.
In-house graphic and product design established the practical foundation: make clear work, solve real constraints and prepare ideas for production.
An independent home for freelance design and illustration work starts taking shape.
The nonprofit and its eighteen-issue magazine bring publishing, youth arts, comics, music and community development together.
Editorial, web and design work continues alongside years teaching digital illustration, graphic design and 2D animation.
Intensive training expands the studio’s language through modeling, texturing and interactive-engine study.
Vigilante works through a five-person core team spanning design, illustration, 3D, animation, development, applications, physical craft and sound.
What stayed constant
The tools and formats have changed repeatedly. The standard has not: understand what the work needs, choose the right people and methods, respect the client’s resources, and make something with enough character to matter.
